Essence and accident: Byzantine portraiture and Aristotelian philosophy

چکیده

The presentation of portraits emperors and saints in Byzantine art can be compared to theories physiognomy logic put forward by Aristotle his followers. Similar observations have been made about the portal sculptures High Gothic cathedrals, but although ordering images two cases reflected similar patterns thought, particular forms differed each milieu, responding a different relationship between faithful society.

Logics of essence and accident

We say that things happen accidentally when they do indeed happen, but only by chance. In the opposite situation, an essential happening is inescapable, its inevitability being the sine qua non for its very occurrence. This paper will investigate modal logics on a language tailored to talk about essential and accidental statements. Completeness of some among the weakest and the strongest such s...

Logics of Essence and Accident

In the literature, essence is formalized in two different ways, either de dicto, or de re. Following [11], we adopt its de dicto formalization: a formula is essential, if once it is true, it is necessarily true; otherwise, it is accidental. In this article, we study the model theory and axiomatization of the logic of essence and accident, i.e. the logic with essence operator (or accident operat...

An Aristotelian Realist Philosophy of Mathematics

Most of the traditional problems in the philosophy of mathematics arise, in 6 James Franklin’s words, out of the ‘oscillation between Platonism and nomi7 nalism, as if those were the only alternatives’ (p. 11). In An Aristotelian Re8 alist Philosophy of Mathematics Franklin develops a tantalizing alternative to 9 these approaches by arguing that at least some mathematical universals exist 10 in...

Aristotelian essentialism: essence in the age of evolution

The advent of contemporary evolutionary theory ushered in the eventual decline of Aristotelian Essentialism (Æ) – for it is widely assumed that essence does not, and cannot have any proper place in the age of evolution. This paper argues that this assumption is a mistake: if Æ can be suitably evolved, it need not face extinction. In it, I claim that if that theory‟s fundamental ontology consist...

The Boxdot Conjecture and the Language of Essence and Accident

We show the Boxdot Conjecture holds for a limited but familiar range of Lemmon-Scott axioms. We re-introduce the language of essence and accident, first introduced by J. Marcos, and show how it aids our strategy. 1   &       In modal logic, the boxdot translation, t, is the following translation: tp = p t? = ? t(φ! ψ) = (tφ! tψ) t φ = ( tφ∧ tφ) Note t...
